Reflections on my First Week Being a Full-Time Photographer | Let’s Be Real…

Grand Rapids Wedding Photographer, Kalamazoo Wedding Photographer, Lansing Wedding PhotographerIt’s officially been one full week that I have been my own boss! A full 168 hours of being a full-time entrepreneur. So, what has it really been like?

I’m not going to lie, the first two days after quitting my day job kind of felt like I just took a few vacation days. It felt weird because my last day was a Wednesday, so Thursday and Friday kind of felt like an extended weekend! It didn’t feel “real” and I’m not going to lie: it was kind of frightening! I thought it would feel real right away and that I would find my groove immediately. You could say I’m not the best at change. I can totally put up a “front” that makes me seem calm and collected but internally I can be in despair haha! Not saying I was in despair, but this transition hasn’t been as easy as I thought!

Thankfully, part of the reason I was a little anxious was the fact that I happened to get Invisalign on the same day I was officially full-time. (Why was that a good idea?!). Let me tell you.. Invisalign HURTS! Ha! I totally underestimated how much that would impact how I was feeling. Those of you who have had braces or Invisalign totally relate, I’m sure!

But, it’s Wednesday as I type this and I can happily say this week has been SO much better. It is starting to feel more real! I am beginning to get into a groove + routine of how I like to work. I know that the next weeks and months will still be transition as I continue to get used to being my own boss, but I am so excited for the journey!

Here are a few goals I have for the next few months before weddings begin again (in no particular order!):

  1. Podcast: This has been in the works for a few months, and I hope in the first few months of 2019 to get my podcast going!
  2. Work on SEO for website & marketing: yep, I need to do my research on SEO and how to optimize my website for getting found on Google!
  3. Work on “for photographers” tab on website: (for editing and coaching).. I have decided that since I have all of my time to focus on my business, I can begin offering an editing service for other photographers! Editing is one of my favorite parts of the job, so being able to offer this to photographers who do not like to edit will be great! I also plan to start doing business coaching for beginner photographers. Education is so SO important and I love being able to teach others what I know. So, expect this soon!
  4. Print off Bridal Guides: (yay I have already done this!!) & send them out (my brides can expect these around Christmas time!)
  5. Sell my old camera: I love my old camera, but this year I was blessed to get a Canon 5D Mark iii, and I just don’t have use for my old Sony camera! I would love to get a few 5D Mark iii bodies!

I have more on the list, but these are the few that are at the top of the list! I am so excited for the “slow” season so that I can work on the back-end of my business!

I also hope to blog at least 1-2x per week to regularly update you all on what I’m up to, etc! Stay tuned for those!

xoxo,

Cynthia
